The Tree In The Middle

Then God planted a garden in Eden, in the east. He put the Man He had just made in it. God made all kinds of trees grow from the ground, trees beautiful to look at and good to eat. The Tree-of-Life was in the middle of the garden, also the Tree-of-Knowledge-of-Good-and-Evil. Genesis 2: 8-9 (MSG Version)

I can see it now. You’ve told me many lies.
Just the way you lied to Eve, you lied to me.
You told her she could be like God if she ate from the tree,
But, the thing is, she already was; she was made in God’s image and utterly free.

You told her she would gain much wisdom if she ate from the tree,
But, the thing is, she already had access to unlimited wisdom through God her Father.
I see how you’ve done this in my life.
Just the way you lied to Eve, you lied to me.

You told me if I ate from that tree I would feel loved,
But, the thing is, I already was, by real love Himself.
You told me if I ate from that tree I would be wanted,
But, the thing is, I already was; more than I ever knew by Him who chose me,
I have been adopted.

You have tried to make me believe that I don’t have something I already have.
You offer me counterfeits even though you know I already have the real thing.
Be on your guard, the lies look reasonable when we lose sense of what God has said and the truth He brings.

While you are working, God is working.
Behind the scenes to defeat all your schemes.
While you are deceptive, God is authentic.
Honest and true; winning one over on you.

I can see it now.
You are fearful of my surrender to Him who sets me free.
You know it is the one thing that will loose your grip and entanglement around me.
You have tried to convince me not to by telling me lies about what could happen if I do.

You want to keep me trapped,
But I have what it takes to see your release from around my neck.
In simple surrender I am strong,
As I give myself to the one who paid the price for my life.
You have no claim on it.
You didn’t pay for it.
Jesus did.

You see, while you have been enticing us all to eat from our own ‘tree in the middle of the garden,’ you are forgetting one thing:
Jesus died on a tree that stood tall in the middle,
Between two others who had eaten from their own.
He did it not only so we could be forgiven when we eat from that tree,
But to show us ‘the tree in the middle of the garden,’ is not the end of our story.
Because the tree in the middle at Calvary was not the end of His.

Genesis 3: 1-6 The serpent was clever, more clever than any wild animal God had made. He spoke to the Woman: “Do I understand that God told you not to eat from any tree in the garden?”

2-3 The Woman said to the serpent, “Not at all. We can eat from the trees in the garden. It’s only about the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, ‘Don’t eat from it;don’t even touch it or you’ll die.’”

4-5 The serpent told the Woman, “You won’t die. God knows that the moment you eat from that tree, you’ll see what’s really going on. You’ll be just like God, knowing everything, ranging all the way from good to evil.”

When the Woman saw that the tree looked like good eating and realized what she would get out of it—she’d know everything!—she took and ate the fruit and then gave some to her husband, and he ate.

“Oh, there was a battle, a war between death and life
And there on a tree, the Lamb of God was crucified
And He went on down to hell, He took back every key
And He rose up as a lion and He set all captives free
There ain’t no grave
Could hold His body down

If you walked out of the grave, I’m walking too.”
