You Need Only Be Still

There is a saying, ‘life is a battle’, and let’s be honest, life can feel like that sometimes can’t it?

As I thought about this theme ‘battles’, I turned to the Scriptures where it talks about many different kinds of battles within the Christian life.
When we give our lives over to Christ, we enter into the greatest battle of all times: the spiritual battle where the enemy the devil prowls around like a lion seeking whom he may destroy (1 Peter 5:8).
The closer we encounter God the more intense this spiritual battle takes place in our lives.

The Bible says “for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).
In Ephesians 6:10-17 we are reminded of the importance of putting on the whole armour of God so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
13 Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

My Testimony

When my husband died, following a brain tumour, I was left to bring up my ten year old daughter and thirteen year old son.  I encountered the greatest spiritual battle ever. The fiery darts that were thrown at me tested my faith and belief in God to the limit.
I hit rock bottom.
And I mean rock bottom.

I was in the kitchen standing over the sink and I heard a loud voice saying, ‘God doesn’t love you, why would a loving God take away a husband and father to two young children? He doesn’t care about you. Your life means nothing to Him. Go on, give me your life.’
Then I heard a still, small, voice saying, ‘you know I love you, Cathy. Don’t listen to the lies of the enemy who seeks to destroy you’.
But, the enemy spoke louder and louder and Gods voice diminished to a whisper and I felt like I was being torn in two.
All of a sudden I could take no more and I screamed out to God, ‘If you really exist and you really do care about me and love me, you just get my phone to ring. Now.’

Immediately, the phone rang.

You can imagine my shock and disbelief. As I answered the phone I almost expected a voice at the other end saying, ‘Hi Cathy, this is God’. But, it was my sister in law ringing to see if I was okay, to which I replied, ‘I am fine’.
I finished my conversation and as soon as I put the phone down it immediately rang again.
It was a Christian friend who was a counsellor. It turned out she had been trying to contact me as, whilst in the middle of a counselling session, the Holy Spirit had spoken to her and told her to leave what she was doing and to phone me immediately.
I blurted out to her what had happened and we realised I was in a spiritual battle. She prayed with me on the phone and I resisted the devil and he fled.

When I started to write this article I had no intention of sharing my testimony, but, as I prayed about what to write, I felt in my Spirit that someone needed to hear it.
One of the tactics of the devil is to get into our minds and our thoughts and twist and turn our thinking around until we start believing the lies he throws at us.  Thank God, He has already won the battle on the Cross, and when the devil comes at us we need to remind him of his destiny.

You need only be still

A few weeks ago, when I was preparing a sermon, the Lord gave me this verse in Exodus 14:14:

The Lord will fight for you, you need only be still

As I looked at the context of this verse, the Israelites were afraid when they saw the Egyptians pursuing them and they started to grumble and complain to Moses. His response to them was in verses 13-14:
“Do not be afraid.  Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.  The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.
The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.”

How amazing is our God?
Here, He fights for His people and brings deliverance from their oppressors.

This God of Israel is the same God who fights for you.

Will you trust him through your battle and be still, while He fights for you?
God bless you as He has the victory in your life.
