Floating through the Exhales

She says, “Imagine your breath
like a wave—pulling it back
into the ocean with your inhale.
Let it crash on the shore
with every exhale.”

To be in control of the waves
with life’s simplest feature—
holding the expanse of water
with the expanse of lungs—
isn’t a possibility for me.

I see you swimming in the sun
or sailing on a calm and shallow
breath that comes with sleep.
I see myself with you, happy for you,
even though I’m sinking under salt
water spraying from the crest of the wave.

“What breath brings this?”
I wonder as I flounder
I wonder as I watch
I wonder as I try
to float on the fact
Someone is still breathing.
